Tory Horton: A Rising Star in College Football

Nevada's 2019 football season brought many memories, particularly their triumph against Fresno State. Leading the charge was third-year head coach Jay Norvell, who played a critical role in shaping the team’s future and setting the stage for standout players like Tory Horton.

Horton’s journey to prominence began in the high school ranks, where his potential was evident during a CIF-Central Section playoff game attended by Eric Scott. During that game, Horton showcased his talent with a spectacular 54-yard catch. Recognizing his potential, Nevada extended Horton his first scholarship offer from an FBS program, a pivotal moment in his young career.

By February 2019, Horton had already established himself as a three-star prospect on 247Sports. He honed his skills as part of the talented No Zone 7-on-7 team, which boasted future Division I receivers such as Xavier Worthy, Jalen McMillan, Jeremiah Hunter, and Mac Dalena. "We had all those receivers on No Zone, and now they're doing the same, if not better, at the next level," recalled Mike Ware, Horton’s Fresno-based 7-on-7 coach.

Before Nevada's offer, Horton's collegiate opportunities were limited to Big Sky schools Montana and Northern Colorado. However, his trajectory changed significantly when Jay Norvell brought Horton with him to Colorado State after being hired in 2022. At Colorado State, Horton’s impact was immediate and profound. In the 2022 season, he caught 71 passes for 1,131 yards and eight touchdowns. Horton's performance only improved in the 2023 season, racking up 96 receptions for 1,136 yards and another eight touchdowns.

Demonstrating remarkable loyalty, Horton chose to return to Colorado State for one final season rather than declaring for the NFL Draft or entering the transfer portal. "He's a loyal kid and comes from a loyal family," noted Chad Savage, a graduate assistant, emphasizing Horton's commitment to his team and his roots.

This loyalty was further tested in Colorado State’s historic 2023 season, which included hosting Colorado for the first time since 1996. Despite facing an injury setback, Horton exhibited his electrifying playmaking abilities with a 78-yard punt return for a touchdown and a team-high 65 yards receiving before being sidelined. Coach Jay Norvell remains optimistic about his return: "Tory is sore but I think he's going to be available to play, so we'll see how he progresses over the week."

Horton’s accolades speak volumes about his abilities. He is a two-time All-Mountain West first-team selection, a testament to his consistency and excellence on the field. Last season’s matchup against Colorado saw Horton achieve a career-high 16 catches for 133 yards and a touchdown, although it ultimately ended in an overtime loss for Colorado State.

As Horton approaches his final year at Colorado State, his journey reflects a narrative of talent, perseverance, and loyalty. The upcoming season promises to showcase more of his outstanding play as he aims to leave a lasting legacy at Colorado State. For now, fans and teammates alike anticipate his return, knowing that Horton’s dedication and skills will be a driving force for the team.
