Cam Jurgens: Carving His Path as the Philadelphia Eagles' New Center
With the 2023 NFL season fast approaching, one of the most closely watched transitions in the Philadelphia Eagles' roster is Cam Jurgens stepping into the role of center. Replacing a figure as iconic as Jason Kelce is no small feat, but Jurgens is setting out to create his own legacy.
Stepping into Big Shoes
Jason Kelce's departure from the center position has left a void that is both challenging and significant. Kelce has been a stalwart for the Eagles, making the role his own over many seasons with solid and consistent performances. Cam Jurgens, however, is not daunted by the task. As Eagles' teammate Landon Dickerson succinctly put it, Jurgens is focused on being the best version of himself.
"He's not gonna try to be 62. He's gonna do what Cam Jurgens does," said Dickerson. "Cam's gonna make his own legacy, his own path, his own destiny."
Jurgens has had limited exposure at center, with just 43 snaps in his two NFL seasons. Notably, he hasn't started a single game at the position for the Eagles. Yet, his talent and adaptability have already shone through his versatility on the offensive line.
Emerging as a Right Guard
Last year, Jurgens showcased his capability by earning the starting right guard spot. Over the course of 631 pass-blocking snaps, he displayed remarkable fortitude by not allowing a single sack and limiting pressures to a mere 18, translating to an impressive pressure rate allowed per dropback of just 4.9%.
"Cam's creating his own path right now. Really smart guy, physical guy, strong guy. Moves well. He's handling this transition from going from guard and a little bit of center last year to playing center right now," added Dickerson.
Free Agency and Player Movement
The Philadelphia Eagles are no strangers to roster reshuffling and this offseason has been no different. With players like Mekhi Becton entering the fray, the dynamics within the team are continually evolving. Despite these changes, Jurgens has remained steadfast, developing strong communication with his teammates.
"You never know what's gonna happen. I think he's done a tremendous job so far of just (providing) clear communication to everybody and setting the standard of how things are supposed to be done in the huddle before we get them the ball," remarked Dickerson.
The Road Ahead
For Jurgens, the upcoming season is a period of transition and opportunity. Moving back to his natural position at center not only aligns with his strengths but also positions him to fill a crucial role for the Eagles. The emphasis on communication, teamwork, and adaptability will be key as he aims to solidify his place on the roster.
As the Eagles' training camp continues and preseason games commence, all eyes will be on Jurgens to see how he navigates this critical shift in responsibility. With the support of his teammates and a clear path laid out before him, Cam Jurgens is poised to step out of Kelce's shadow and make the center position his own.
