Detroit Lions Prepare for Jahmyr Gibbs' Return from Injury

The Detroit Lions are preparing for the much-anticipated return of running back Jahmyr Gibbs from a hamstring injury, a key event that could significantly influence their upcoming game against the Los Angeles Rams. Head coach Dan Campbell remains optimistic about Gibbs' recovery trajectory, expressing confidence in his availability for Week 1.

Gibbs' Injury and Recovery

Gibbs, who sustained the hamstring injury during a practice session earlier this month, has been making steady progress. Campbell mentioned, "Our plan is to get him going next week," suggesting that Gibbs is "trending the right way" in terms of his recovery. This development brings a sense of relief to the Lions' camp, as Gibbs' performance is integral to their offensive strategy.

Though there has been some frustration regarding the lack of practice time with Gibbs due to the injury, Campbell remains hopeful. "Wish we had more practice with him," Campbell admitted. "But as far as the health of it, he's healing and he's on schedule to be back, and get his legs back under him. And we'll see where he's at."

Performance and Potential

In his debut season, Gibbs proved to be a pivotal player for the Lions. He amassed 945 rushing yards and 10 touchdowns on 182 carries, ranking second on the team in rushing yards, touchdowns, and carries. Additionally, Gibbs recorded 52 receptions for 316 yards and one touchdown, showcasing his versatility and importance to the team's offensive efforts.

Gibbs’ contributions were particularly notable during the playoffs, where he added 144 rushing yards and three touchdowns on 29 carries. He also had 94 yards and one touchdown on 14 receptions during the postseason, further solidifying his role as a key offensive weapon for the Lions.

Upcoming Preseason Finale

As the Lions gear up for their final preseason game against the Pittsburgh Steelers on Saturday, the focus remains on getting several key players back in action. Campbell shared his hopeful outlook, stating, "We're hoping the day after [this Saturday's preseason finale against the Steelers], I think we're going to get a lot of guys back." This includes potential returnees like tight end Sam LaPorta, offensive tackle Dan Skipper, guard Kevin Zeitler, linebacker Malcolm Rodriguez, and defensive lineman DJ Reader.

Looking ahead to next week's preparations leading up to the Rams game, Campbell expressed optimism about the team's overall health. "So, we're about to get a whole group of guys back, hopefully Sunday," he noted. This return of key players is expected to bolster the team's preparation and practice sessions before meeting the Rams.

Final Preparations

With a rigorous preparation week in the cards, Campbell is focused on getting the team ready for a strong start to the season. "And then they'll get next week's practice before we get ready for the Rams and then we do Rams practice. So, Gibbs falls into that boat," he mentioned, highlighting the importance of those final practice sessions for both Gibbs and the rest of the team.

As the Lions finalize their preseason activities, the return of Gibbs and other essential players is a promising sign for the team’s strategy. The collective hope and objective is clear: to have a fully fit and prepared squad ready to compete at their highest potential against the Rams in Week 1.
