Pittsburgh Steelers Offense Prepares for 2023 Season Under New Coordinator

As the Pittsburgh Steelers gear up for the 2023 NFL regular season, significant changes in their offensive strategy are already making headlines. Newly appointed offensive coordinator Arthur Smith is at the helm, aiming to revive a franchise that has recently struggled to find consistency on offense.

A Rocky Preseason Start

The Steelers, despite high hopes, have seen a rocky start this preseason with exhibition losses against Houston and Buffalo. The team’s shortcomings were obvious: poor offensive line play, pre-snap penalties, and an inability to convert on crucial downs. Notably, Zach Wilson, who currently holds the top spot on the depth chart over rookie Justin Fields, failed to lead the team to a single score during his time on the field against Buffalo. He completed 8 of 10 passes for 47 yards but was sacked three times, further highlighting the team's offensive line issues.

Arthur Smith, speaking candidly about the preseason struggles, said, "Preseason can distort reality, good or bad. We've all seen it. That's not making excuses... That's not our standard. That's not acceptable, but at the same time, would rather go through that now than have that happen Week 1. We've got to get out of our own way."

The struggles in this year's preseason are not unfamiliar territory for Smith. In 2019, as the offensive coordinator for the Tennessee Titans, Smith faced a similar challenge. The Titans managed a mere 7 points in three preseason games but rebounded dramatically, scoring 43 points in their regular-season opener. The 2019 Titans went on to rank 10th in the NFL in scoring, with Derrick Henry winning the first of his consecutive rushing titles.

Quarterback Conundrum

The focus remains heavily on the quarterback situation in Pittsburgh. While Zach Wilson sits atop the depth chart, his performances have been less than stellar, marred by sacks and missed opportunities. Justin Fields has also had his struggles, unable to provide the spark needed to secure his position as the starter. Head Coach Mike Tomlin holds the final decision on who will start, a significant call as the team looks to establish an effective offensive rhythm.

Smith addressed the uncertainty, stating, "That's not a decision I have the burden to make." The decision on whether Wilson will play in Pittsburgh’s preseason finale against Detroit remains pending, adding more suspense to the quarterback saga.

Overhaul and Adjustments

The Pittsburgh offense has seen significant changes over the past year. Last season under the direction of then-offensive coordinator Matt Canada, the Steelers’ offense led by Kenny Pickett managed to score touchdowns on each of its five preseason possessions. However, the inability to carry that momentum into the regular season ultimately led to Canada's dismissal.

Smith’s arrival marked a major overhaul, particularly in the quarterback room. This transition phase is crucial, with Smith focusing on fundamentals, reducing penalties, and ensuring a cohesive performance when the regular season begins. "I give Russ a lot of credit for going out there. I think a lot of guys in that situation may have tapped out. He hadn't had enough reps. He wanted to go out there," said Smith, reflecting on the team’s approach and determination.

The Steelers' immediate goal is to iron out the wrinkles in their game and build an offense that can compete at a high level. With the regular season fast approaching, Smith’s task is clear: to turn preseason disappointments into regular-season success.

The road ahead is challenging, but if history is any guide, Arthur Smith's teams have managed to find their footing when it matters most. The Pittsburgh faithful will be hoping for a repeat of the Titans' 2019 resurgence when the games start to count. Only time will tell if the new-look Steelers can rise to the occasion.
