Coaching Staff Changes for the New Jersey Devils
The New Jersey Devils have officially solidified their coaching roster ahead of the upcoming NHL season. Head coach Sheldon Keefe has brought Jeremy Colliton on board, a strategic addition aimed at bolstering the team’s performance and ensuring a cohesive environment for progress.
New Coaching Structure
Tom Fitzgerald, President and General Manager of the Devils, announced the new arrangement on Tuesday. This announcement follows Keefe's hiring less than three weeks ago after his departure from the Toronto Maple Leafs.
In this transition, Keefe has retained the majority of the interim coaching staff. Travis Green, who served as interim coach towards the end of last season following the dismissal of Lindy Ruff in early March, remains part of the coaching equation. Alongside him, assistant coaches Ryan McGill, Chris Taylor, and Sergei Brylin, as well as goaltending coach Dave Rogalski, will continue in their roles. This continuity is expected to provide a stable and familiar environment, fostering a collective and cohesive approach for the next season.
Jeremy Colliton's Background
Jeremy Colliton brings a wealth of experience to the Devils. For the past two seasons, he has coached the Abbotsford Canucks in the AHL, leading the team to commendable records and playoff appearances. His tenure with the Chicago Blackhawks, where he served as head coach for parts of four seasons, adds valuable NHL experience to his resume. At the age of 33, he became the NHL's youngest head coach, posting a record of 87-92-26 with the Blackhawks. Additionally, he coached their AHL affiliate in Rockford and has international coaching experience in Sweden, having coached in Sweden's second league from 2013 to 2017.
In 2022, Colliton was the head coach for Team Canada at the Winter Olympics, stepping in for Claude Julien who was injured. Although Team Canada did not secure a medal, this experience adds an international dimension to Colliton’s already impressive coaching portfolio.
Playing Background
Before embarking on his coaching career, Jeremy Colliton was a professional ice hockey player. He was drafted in the second round of the 2003 NHL Draft by the New York Islanders and spent six seasons within the Islanders' organization, playing as a center. Colliton's playing career includes 57 NHL games, during which he recorded three goals and three assists. His journey as both a player and coach gives him a comprehensive understanding of the game, making him a valuable addition to the Devils' coaching staff.
Strategic Outlook
The integration of Jeremy Colliton into the coaching roster is a strategic move by the New Jersey Devils. Both Keefe and Colliton plan to leverage their extensive expertise to propel the Devils to new heights in the NHL. The familiarity among the coaching staff is anticipated to create a cohesive environment that can nurture talent and foster growth. This stability promises to positively impact the team’s performance in the upcoming season.
The organization, its players, and its fans are keenly observing these changes with optimism. The aim is to compete vigorously in the NHL and make significant strides forward. With a solid coaching structure now in place, the Devils are poised to face the challenges of the new season with renewed vigor and strategic direction.
